The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a retrovirus which can gradually damage an infected person’s immune system. Often passed on through unprotected sex with someone who has HIV, the virus is transmittable when the infected sexual secretions of one partner meet the genital, oral, or rectal mucous membranes of another.
The infection has two types, HIV-1 and HIV-2. These virus types reduce the number of CD4 cells that defend against infections and diseases in our bodies. As well as increasing your risk of catching other STIs, HIV can also lead to Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome, or AIDS. AIDS is a potentially fatal condition where the immune system begins to fail, resulting in serious infections that the body would normally be able to combat naturally. Owing to decades of research and medical progression, people who are treated for HIV are now much more likely to remain healthy and well.
Knowing your HIV status is extremely important as it can protect both your health and that of any current or future partners. So, if you think you may have been exposed to the virus, stay safe and get yourself tested. With Better2Know your HIV test can be arranged individually or as part of a combination of tests for other STIs, known as a screen.
With sexual health clinics in Al Muraqqabat, Jumeirah Beach and Umm Suqeim, Better2Know has HIV and STI testing facilities across the Emirate of Dubai. For your convenience, our Dubai clinics are open six days a week.
You can test for HIV, along with Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C, as part of our Early Detection Screen. This screen is appropriate just 10 days after an incident of concern and, if present, will detect the virus itself. Due to the seriousness of the infection, Better2Know does recommend a second test within 60-90 days if your result returns a negative.
Alternatively, our 4th Generation test is suitable 28 days after potential exposure to the virus, detecting both HIV types and the P24 Antigen.
There are many countries, including the UAE, that require HIV certification as part of their visa application process. This is usually pertinent for longer visits or work visas.
Better2Know can provide you with both an HIV test and an HIV Certificate, which will be available once all your test results are ready. If you do require an HIV Certificate, please inform our patient services team upon booking your test or screen. National regulations surrounding sexual health can be complex, so be sure to check the relevant entry requirements before you travel.
