Better2Know can arrange for your coil to be removed at many of our private clinics in the Middle East. Our private clinics provide same-day or next-day appointments, six days a week. So, you can arrange your private coil removal appointment for a time and date that suits you.

Your Coil Removal Appointment

At your confidential coil removal appointment:

  • You will see a qualified Better2Know doctor.
  • Your private doctor will go through the coil removal process.
  • A speculum will be inserted into the vagina.
  • Better2Know’s doctor will look for the coil threads that should be present at the opening of your cervix.
  • Your doctor will then gently pull on the threads with forceps to remove the coil.
  • Following removal, paracetamol and ibuprofen can help relieve any pain or discomfort.

Your Better2Know advisor will help you locate the most convenient private clinic for you. Before you have your coil removed, you are advised to abstain from sexual intercourse at least seven days before your appointment.

There are some circumstances where the threads may not be visible. In this situation, you may require an ultrasound to locate them. This will involve a narrow instrument being inserted into your cervix. Once located, the removal process will continue as above. If these additional services are needed, additional charges may apply.

About The Coil

The coil is a form of contraception that is inserted into a woman’s womb to prevent pregnancy. It does not protect you against sexually transmitted infections; you should always use a condom (male or female) when engaging in sexual activities. This includes oral, anal or vaginal intercourse. There are two variations of the coil: the copper coil and the hormonal coil.

The Copper Coil

The copper coil is known as an Intrauterine Device (IUD). It releases copper to prevent pregnancy and lasts between 5 and 10 years. The released copper changes the cervical mucus, making it harder for the sperm to reach an egg and survive. The implantation of a fertilised egg can also be prevented as a result of the copper. The copper coil can be fitted at any time, providing that you are not pregnant. It can also be removed whenever you like; it is possible to conceive straight after removal.

The Hormonal Coil

The hormonal coil is known as an Intrauterine System (IUS). This method of contraception releases progestogen to protect you against pregnancy, lasting between 3 and 5 years. Progestogen thickens the cervical mucus, making if more difficult for the sperm to fertilise an egg. The hormone also thins the lining of the womb. This decreases the chances of implantation from a fertilised egg. In some cases, progestogen can also prevent ovulation each month – though most women do continue to release eggs.

The hormonal coil can be inserted at any time, if you are not pregnant. If it is fitted within the first 7 days of your menstrual cycle, you will usually be protected against pregnancy straight away. If the hormonal coil is inserted at any other time, you are advised to use a condom for 7 days after having it fitted. The hormonal coil can be removed at any time and you can get pregnant as soon as it has been removed.
