What is Gardnerella?

Gardnerella is a bacterial infection. It is most often associated with Bacterial Vaginosis.  It is a very common cause of vaginal infection in women.  Gardnerella is the result of bacterial overgrowth (making it different from thrush/ candida which is caused by a yeast).  There are many reasons which can cause this imbalance ranging from changing soap to a new sexual partner, using an IUD and not using a condom.

How do I know if I have it?

Gardnerella often has no symptoms, especially in men.  If you do have symptoms, these can include:

  • Burning or painful sensation when urinating
  • Watery discharge
  • Irritation in the genital area

  • Distinct "fishy" smell caused by a change in the pH levels in the vagina
  • Burning or painful sensation when urinating
  • Abnormal discharge from the vagina
  • Unusual pain during intercourse
Did you know? …

Gardnerella can only be passed from a women to their partner.  It is not passed on by men.

How can I get it?

Ureaplasma is a naturally occuring bacteria in women.  If it gets out of control it can be passed on to men through vaginal intercourse.

What happens if I do not get treatment?

Men need only get treatment if they have symptoms or their partner is or is trying to get pregnant.  Many men clear the infection without medication.

Women may go onto develop PID, and continue to have irritating symptoms.  Gardnerella can cause complications in pregnancy and child birth.  It is is important to get treatment if you are or want to be pregant.
