What is Mycoplasma?

Mycoplasma is a bacterial infection. It is sexually transmitted, and affects both men and women. If left untreated it can cause infertility, Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) and other long-term health issues.

How can I catch Mycoplasma?

Mycoplasma can be transmitted during vaginal or anal sex. This is because the bacteria can thrive in various regions of the body including the penis, vagina, and anus.

What are the symptoms of Mycoplasma?

In most cases, you will have no symptoms.

However, for women who have symptoms, they may include:

  • Burning or painful sensation during urination,
  • Vaginal itching,
  • Pain during sex.

In men, the infection is often diagnosed in those who suffer from urethritis (inflammation of the urethra) which is not caused by Gonorrhoea or Chlamydia. Symptoms in men, if they are present, may include:

  • Urethral discharge, often watery,
  • Burning or painful sensation during urination,
  • Arthritis (pain and swelling in the joints).

Did you know? …

Mycoplasma is one of the smallest bacterium, making it difficult to treat.

What happens if I do not get treatment?

Men

Mycoplasma can cause urethritis (an infection of the urethra). This can lead to more painful symptoms and the infection can also be passed on.

Women

In women, it can cause an infection of the cervix, which can spread to the fallopian tubes. Mycoplasma in these cases can reduce fertility, lead to PID, and symptoms may become more painful.
