How do I know if I have an STI? What are the symptoms?

Most STIs do not have any symptoms to start with.  When symptoms do occur, they can vary by infection and by person.  It is important to get tested. Please click on an individual infection information page above for a description of symptoms associate with a given infection.

When should I get tested?

The incubation or window periods are different for each STI.  This is the minimum period that you have to wait between any incident you are concerned about and getting tested. It varies between 10 and 28 days. There is no maximum time period for our tests.

How long does it take to get results?

This varies by the tests you choose, but is within 1-5 days from when the sample is received in the laboratory,

Are my results confidential?

If you choose to get tested with Better2Know we will not disclose that you have attended a test appointment to anyone without your consent. However, the laboratory where your sample is analysed will follow national regulations in the event of a positive test. This may include a requirement to provide photographic ID at the time of your test. All Better2Know screening options are flexible and you can choose which tests to include.
