What is Ureaplasma?

Ureaplasma is a bacteria which can occur naturally in both men and women. If the bacteria grow too fast, it can cause irritation. The bacteria can also be passed on through sexual contact.

What are the symptoms of Ureaplasma?

It is often difficult to know whether or not you are infected with Ureaplasma. Many people with the infection will not have any symptoms at all. However, if present, symptoms may include:

  • Burning or painful sensation when urinating
  • Need to urinate more often
  • Slow urine stream
  • Abnormal discharge from the penis
  • Inflamed or swollen testicles
  • Discomfort around the tip of the penis.

  • Burning or painful sensation when urinating
  • Discharge from the vagina
  • Unusual pain during intercourse.

Did you know? …

Ureaplasma can cause complications if you are or want to be pregnant. The only way to know if you have it is to get tested.

How can I catch Ureaplasma?

Ureaplasma occurs naturally in the body. Stress or a change in your daily routine may lead to an overgrowth or outbreak. It can also be sexually transmitted through vaginal intercourse.

What happens if I do not get treatment?

Ureaplasma can cause urethritis in men. This can be a painful condition. An untreated infection can also be passed onto a partner.

In women, a Ureaplasma infection can cause irritation in the genital area and pain when having sex or urinating. An untreated infection may make it harder to get pregnant, and/ or increase the risk of miscarriage. It is important to ensure that you do not have an infection during pregnancy or birth.
