What is Ureaplasma?

Ureaplasma is a bacteria which can occur naturally in both men and woman.  If the bacteria grow too fast, then they can cause irritation  The bacteria can also be passed on through sexual contact.   

How do I know if I have it?

It is often difficult to know whether or not you are infected with Ureaplasma.  Many people will the infection will not have symptoms at all.  However symptoms may include:

Men

  • Burning or painful sensation when urinating
  • Need to urinate more often
  • Slow urine stream
  • Abnormal discharge from the penis
  • Inflamed or swollen testicles
  • Discomfort around the tip of the penis

Women

  • Burning or painful sensation when urinating
  • Discharge from the vagina
  • Unusual pain during intercourse

How can I get it?

Ureaplasma occurs naturally in the body.  Stress, or a change in your daily routine may lead to an overgrowth or outbreak.  It can then also be sexually transmitted through vaginal intercourse.

What happens if I do not get treatment?

Men

Ureaplasma can cause urethritis in men. This can be a painful condition. An untreated infection can also be passed on to a partner.

Women

In women, a ureaplasma infection can cause irriation in the genital area, pain when having sex or urinating.  An untreated infection may make it harder to get pregnant, and/ or increase the risk of miscarriage.  It is important not to have an infection during pregnancy or birth.
