How do I know if I have chronic fatigue syndrome?

The Chronic Fatigue Syndrome test aims to identify why you might be feeling unwell and extremely tired. Chronic fatigue syndrome is a long-term illness and goes by the name of myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME). It is characterised by feelings of extreme fatigue and tiredness that have lasted for at least six months and which do not go away following rest.

Why consider a chronic fatigue syndrome test?

The main symptom of chronic fatigue is extreme tiredness. Other symptoms include:

  • Muscle or joint pain
  • Headaches
  • Sleep problems
  • Cognitive issues
  • Fast or irregular heartbeat
  • Sore throat
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness

Are you frequently feeling unusually tired? If you are, you should have a comprehensive check of the main causes of fatigue. The Better2Know chronic fatigue test will also look at the other leading causes of fatigue, such as diabetes, vitamin deficiencies, and anaemia.

How does this test work?

At a clinic of your choice, your clinician will collect a blood sample from your arm. The blood sample will then be sent for analysis to our fully accredited laboratory.

What tests will you run on my sample?

The chronic fatigue syndrome test will analyse:

  • Epstein-Barr Virus. This test will detect antibodies to the Epstein-Barr Virus which can cause glandular fever.
  • C-reactive protein (CRP). This is a marker of inflammation. This test measures the level of CRP in your blood.
  • Vitamin D. Low levels can result in depression, feeling low in energy, and an increase in body aches and pains.
  • Lymphocytes. This test tells you how strong your immune system is and helps to predict how likely you are to develop an infection.

When will I receive my test results?

Your test results will be available to review within five working days after your sample has arrived at our accredited local Middle East laboratory. You will be able to access your results online by logging into your secure patient area on our website, at any time. One of our Patient Services team will be in touch with you when all your results are ready to view.

What happens if chronic fatigue syndrome is detected?

You should contact a doctor if the test detects any abnormal levels of Epstein Barr virus, CRP, vitamin D, or lymphocytes. Your doctor may recommend further testing and medication to ensure that you are appropriately treated. At Better2Know, we can arrange private doctor consultations for you, around the Middle East using our network and database of skilled doctors.
