What is gliadin?
Gluten can be found in wheat, barley, and rye, which are common in cereal-based products and are an additive in many others. Gliadin is a protein found in gluten and may trigger a response from your immune system if you have a genetic predisposition to a gluten allergy and/or Coeliac disease. The immune response is triggered because your body views gluten as 'foreign' and therefore produces autoantibodies as a defence mechanism, resulting in inflammation and damage to the small intestine. Gliadin can be produced for other reasons apart from gluten intolerance; therefore, this test is often taken alongside a Tissue Transglutaminase IgA test for a more accurate result.
Coeliacs may suffer from any of a number of symptoms including:
- Bloating
- Diarrhoea
- Flatulence or excess wind
- Unexplained weight loss
What is the main test for gliadin?
The Better2Know gliadin antibody test assists doctors in diagnosing Coeliac disease since the test detects gliadin autoantibodies. The gliadin antibody test may be for you if you have experienced the symptoms above or have a family history of Gluten intolerance or Coeliac disease. By taking this test on its own or with a Tissue Transglutaminase IgA test, you will be able to find out whether you need to see a doctor or nutritionist to discuss treatment.
