Better2Know is the world’s leading provider of private HIV and STI testing services. With clinics throughout the UAE, including Sharjah, Better2Know’s HIV testing is available around the country. Our private sexual health clinics in Sharjah are open throughout the week for swift, accurate and confidential testing.

Much like its neighbouring Emirates, Dubai and Abu Dhabi, Sharjah’s cosmopolitan community continues to grow. That said, the regulations surrounding sexual health and HIV remain complex. Under UAE laws, you might be required to present identification at your appointment, so it is always advisable to be aware of the state legislation prior to travelling.

What is HIV?

HIV Testing in Sharjah and the UAE

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a retrovirus that is transmittable by infected body fluids including blood, seminal and vaginal fluid, and breast milk. The infection has two types, HIV-1 and HIV-2, both of which reduce the number of vital CD4 cells that protect us from illness and disease.

If left unmanaged, HIV can also lead to Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), a potentially life-threatening condition. With AIDS, the immune system starts to fail, resulting in serious infections that would ordinarily be dealt with in a healthy body.

It is estimated that 36.7 million people worldwide are living with HIV, which is often acquired through unprotected sex with an infected person. The virus can also be transmitted through transfusions of infected blood as well as the sharing of needles or syringes, usually for recreational drug use.

How can I be tested for HIV in Sharjah?

It is extremely important to be certain of your HIV status in order to protect your own health and that of any current or future partners. Better2Know’s HIV test requires a simple blood sample, which can be collected at our Sharjah clinics.

The 4th Generation test looks for antibodies to both HIV types, as well as the P24 antigen, and is appropriate 28 days after potential exposure to the virus. If you would like to be tested more quickly following an incident of concern, our Early Detection Screen is suitable just ten days after potential exposure. As well as HIV, this screen tests for both Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C. Given the serious nature of HIV, following your Early Detection Screen it is advisable to be retested between 60 and 90 days later.
