Hepatitis can be contracted through sex with a person who has the virus. If left untreated, the viral condition can progress into cirrhosis, liver failure or liver cancer. This emphasises the importance of regular testing, so you can receive treatment as soon as possible if required. Better2Know provides private Hepatitis testing in Bahrain.

Hepatitis remains ‘a major health concern’ across the Middle East. Better2Know’s private STI testing services offer a range of testing options for Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C in Bahrain, including Manama. We operate at the highest international standards of care and quality, providing accurate and confidential testing for patients across the Middle East.

Hepatitis A (HAV)

  • Transmission: HAV may be transmitted through unprotected sexual contact including vaginal, anal and oral intercourse. It can also be acquired through contaminated food and water. Other forms of transference include sharing needles (intravenous drug use) and person-to-person contact.
  • Symptoms: Symptoms of Hepatitis A can seem mild and may dissipate after a month. Some common signs of infection are fever, nausea and vomiting, joint or muscle pain, abdominal pain, unusual bowel movements, fatigue, dark urine, intense itching, and possible cases of jaundice.

Hepatitis B (HBV)

  • Transmission: You are exposed to HBV through contaminated bodily fluids, such as blood. This virus can be transferred via sexual intercourse, especially if you or your partner has any open wounds (cuts or tears) around the genital area. Sharing needles or razors can also contribute to contracting Hepatitis B. Unsterilised equipment such as tattoo guns, body piercing equipment, acupuncture needles or needlestick injures also puts you at risk of infection.
  • Symptoms: Infected individuals do not always show outward signs of infection but may feel mildly unwell. If symptoms are present, they can include vomiting, nausea, fatigue, dark urine, jaundice and abdominal pain. If this infection goes untreated, it can result in liver cancer, liver failure and even death.

Hepatitis C (HCV)

  • Transmission: HCV is also transmitted through exposure to infected blood or other bodily fluids. Other methods of acquiring Hepatitis C include sharing personal items such as needles or razors. Contaminated blood transfusions and use of tattoo or body piercing equipment that has not been sterilised properly, may also result in infection.
  • Symptoms: Hepatitis C can be asymptomatic over a long period. If symptoms do appear they can include fever, aching limbs or joint pain, fatigue, nausea or vomiting, digestive problems, jaundice, abdominal pain, brain fog or the loss of appetite. Untreated Hepatitis C infections can result in liver cancer, liver failure and ultimately death.

Better2Know’s Hepatitis Screening Options

There are various Better2Know screens that include testing for Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C. You can also choose to combine individual tests for other infections as part of a more conclusive STI screen. Better2Know recommends the Hepatitis Screen, which will detect the three virus types mentioned above. This testing option requires an incubation period of 28 days, and a single blood sample for analysis.

If you want to get tested even sooner, Better2Know’s Early Detection Screen is ideal for you. This screen is the earliest test available for HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C and is suitable just 10 days after a sexual encounter.

The Platinum Screen is our most comprehensive testing option, looking for eleven harmful STIs. These include: Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HIV, Syphilis, Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, Herpes I/II, Mycoplasma, Trichomonas and Ureaplasma. If you are unsure which testing option is right for you, please contact our Patient Services team and your advisor will be able to help.

Sample Analysis and Results

Your sample will be taken by a qualified medical practitioner at your private appointment in Bahrain. A blood sample is required for Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C analysis. However, other samples may be required depending on which screen or test you have selected.

Results will be ready within one to three working days and Better2Know’s trained Patient Services staff will contact you once they are all ready to report. You will be sent details that you can use to log in to our secure patient area on the Better2Know website.

Here, you can monitor the progress of your results. If you test positive for Hepatitis A, B or C, we will run secondary tests to confirm your result. Your experienced sexual health advisor will refer you to a specialist service for further treatment and advice, if necessary.

In the Kingdom of Bahrain, Better2Know’s services adhere strictly to the national legislation. This means you may be required to provide a form of personal identification at your private appointment. If you have been experiencing symptoms or have not had an STI test in a while, you should book an appointment with Better2Know today.
