Syphilis is a bacterial infection that is transmitted through direct contact with an infected person. It is curable with antibiotics, though the infection becomes more dangerous the longer it is left to develop in the body. Syphilis testing is available in Abu Dhabi with Better2Know.

Syphilis is commonly passed on through oral, vaginal or anal intercourse with someone who has a Syphilis sore, also known as a Chancre. Chancres often occur on the external genitals, vagina, anus or rectum. At our Abu Dhabi clinics, Better2Know can test you for Syphilis.

Syphilis symptoms & stages

Whilst many people infected with Syphilis can go years without showing symptoms, they remain at risk of late complications if they are not treated. On average, the first symptoms of Syphilis appear around three weeks after a person’s exposure to the infection, though symptoms can begin to appear from 10 to 90 days after an incident of concern.

There are three stages of Syphilis infection:

Primary stage: This is marked by a sore or a chancre, which is usually a firm, round and often painless blemish. Ordinarily, the chancre will last one to five weeks before healing by itself. If left untreated, this can progress to the Secondary stage.

Secondary stage: This begins when one or more areas of the skin develop a non-itching rash. Such rashes can resemble rough, ‘copper penny’ spots in appearance and can form on the bottom of the feet and palms of the hands. The rash could also manifest as a prickly heat rash, small scales or blotches all over the body, a bad case of acne, white patches in the mouth, moist warts in the groin area, pus-filled, pox like eruptions, or sunken dark circles. These rashes can remain for 2-6 weeks and, similarly to the chancres, can heal on their own.

Latent stage: This stage progresses unknown to the carrier and may eventually damage the infected person’s internal organs. Syphilis can also cause miscarriages, premature births and stillbirths, as well as risks of deformities, irreversible health problems, and even death in newborn babies.
