Our comprehensive service offers tests and screens for a variety of sexually transmitted infections, including HIV.
The Human Immunodeficiency Virus is a viral infection that has two types – HIV-1 and HIV-2. Over time the virus reduces the number of CD4 cells that defend us from illness and disease. If left untreated, an HIV infection can lead to Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). When an individual develops AIDS, their immune system begins to fail. This results in serious and potentially life-threatening infections that the body would ordinarily be able to combat naturally.
HIV can be transmitted in several ways. The bodily fluids that can transfer the virus include: blood, semen, vaginal fluid, breast milk, rectal mucous and pre-ejaculate. Often acquired through unprotected sex with an infected person, the virus can also be passed on by sharing needles or syringes (usually for recreational drug use) with someone who has the infection. Though it is becoming increasingly rare, HIV can also be spread through transfusions of infected blood.
Following the initial onset of symptoms, which can appear within six weeks of infection, many people can be symptomless for years. In fact, it is estimated that over 14 million people living with HIV worldwide, are unaware of their infection. Common symptoms of HIV infection include rashes, diarrhoea, sweating and night sweats, unintentional weight loss, tiredness, nausea and loss of appetite, or swollen lymph glands in the neck, groin or armpit. If you recognise any of these symptoms, or are simply unsure, call Better2Know today to arrange an appointment.
