What is HIV?

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus is a viral infection that has two types – HIV-1 and HIV-2. Over time the virus reduces the number of CD4 cells that defend us from illness and disease. If left untreated, an HIV infection can lead to Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). When an individual develops AIDS, their immune system begins to fail. This results in serious and potentially life-threatening infections that the body would ordinarily be able to combat naturally.

HIV can be transmitted in several ways. The bodily fluids that can transfer the virus include: blood, semen, vaginal fluid, breast milk, rectal mucous and pre-ejaculate. Often acquired through unprotected sex with an infected person, the virus can also be passed on by sharing needles or syringes (usually for recreational drug use) with someone who has the infection. Though it is becoming increasingly rare, HIV can also be spread through transfusions of infected blood.

Symptoms & Testing

Following the initial onset of symptoms, which can appear within six weeks of infection, many people can be symptomless for years. In fact, it is estimated that over 14 million people living with HIV worldwide, are unaware of their infection. Common symptoms of HIV infection include rashes, diarrhoea, sweating and night sweats, unintentional weight loss, tiredness, nausea and loss of appetite, or swollen lymph glands in the neck, groin or armpit. If you recognise any of these symptoms, or are simply unsure, call Better2Know today to arrange an appointment.

We have two types of HIV test available across the Middle East.

  • The 28-day HIV DUO test combines an antibody test for strains 1 & 2 of the HIV virus, with an antigen test for the p24 antigen. The test is suitable for those who may have been exposed at least 28 days before their test. This is a highly reliable, 4th Generation HIV test and is included in several of our multifaceted screens.
  • Better2Know’s 10-day HIV test is available as part of the Early Detection Screen. It is the market’s most accurate test at that stage of incubation. It remains advisable to retest within 90 days if you receive a negative result for a 10-day test.

Should you require an HIV test certificate for visa or work purposes, Better2Know can get you what you need. Similarly, if you wish to speak to a doctor before or after your test, we can make the appropriate arrangements with a network of doctors across the Middle East.
